This is our family home, and you can tell. It won a Southern Architecture Award in 2017 — single level, built around the view, with three bedrooms yours and a bathroom each, and our daughters’ two rooms closed while you are here.

The living room

The house is one long single-storey run, and the living room sits at the heart of it: timber lining above, schist around the fire, and glazing along the whole northern side so the paddock, the pond and the mountains are in the room with you.

There is a log burner for the cold end of the day and underfloor heating for the rest of it. The kitchen opens off the same space, which means whoever is cooking is still in the conversation.

The bedrooms

Three bedrooms. Three bathrooms. Nobody negotiates.

A super king that splits into two king singles on request, a king, and a queen — and a bathroom for each of them. Two are ensuite; the third has a bathroom of its own, with a bath set to the view.

For two couples travelling together, or a family with teenagers, this is usually the thing that decides it. There are two further WCs beyond that.

Outside

A fire in the courtyard, and ducks on the pond by breakfast.

The courtyard is undercover and faces the paddock, with a schist fireplace at one end and a barbecue at the other, so it works in a southerly as readily as in February.

From the table you look straight out at the pond, the ducks and, if they are feeling sociable, the ponies.

The quiet corners

A library that doubles as the movie room, and a desk with the best outlook in the house.

Not every hour of a holiday is spent outdoors, and the house is unusually well set up for the ones that are not. There is a proper library — a wall of books, a deep sofa and the screen for when the weather turns — and a home office wrapped in glazing on three sides.

Starlink runs throughout, which matters more than it should for the guest who has one call they cannot move.

If your group has outgrown six, the loft sleeps another four behind its own front door — and taking both buildings turns the sauna, ice bath, spa and gym from shared into exclusively yours.
